Welcome To Our Family History Website!

This is the culmination of 15 years of work. It builds on genealogical data my father collected by visiting churches in Saxony, as a young man. He gathered data on the Leuteritz family dating back to 1659 in Rabenau, Saxony. Our history spans three continents and 15+ countries around the world. There are over 800 people living and dead represented chronicling some 425 years. Our history shows we have lived through adversity and carried on in times of wars, pandemics, and immigration.

In addition to the actual family tree the site contains several blogs with detailed stories of some of the ancestors or events. The web site also contains a place where you can provide/upload corrections, updates, photos, videos, sound files, and other information to add to the family genealogy. Family research is a never ending and an ever-evolving process.

For privacy of personal information, a significant portion of the site has been password protected. If you are interested in access, please contact me.

Finally, I dedicate this website to my cousin Christine Mueller who inspired me to make this site accessible to family.

Joseph Huber

Biography: Musician & Painter - Joseph Huber (1895 -1993)

Joseph (Josef) Huber was born in Leim (a section of Munich) Bavaria, Germany on 16 Dec 1895. He was a lifelong musician and painter. He made a living as a professional musician and was able to provide for himself and his family largely from playing his music in many venues throughout his life. Although he was a talented painter, he largely did not make a living off his paintings.

MUSICIAN

Joseph started violin lessons in 1911 in Munich when he was only 16 years old. He wanted to become a teacher but with the advent of WWI, this never happened. He primarily played violin all his life but could also play saxophone, clarinet, and trumpet.

During WWI Joseph was in the Imperial German Navy (1913-1919) assigned to the battleship SMS Kaiser. While serving, he was part of the ship band and played music while the ship was being loaded (at right with clarinet).

In 1919 after the war, he moved to Stettin (then NE Germany today part of Poland - Szczecin) and found work in coffee houses and biergartens playing with a Bavarian folk's band. Stettin is where he met his wife, Elsa, and started their family. After this he was hired as a pit orchestra player in light opera theaters. One of his best memories was playing music in the café of the Hotel Preussenhof (Stettin's first-class hotel) most likely under the bandmaster/composer Kurt Noack. This was followed up for a short time playing in bands for silent movie houses (like the Helios Welt Kino est.1907 still in existence today as Kino Pionier 1907).

During WWII Joseph worked for the Music Corps of the Stettin Harbor Police, often playing music for the workmen as they cleaned the battle ships, where he remained until Germany surrendered. From 1945 - 1946 he was held prisoner under Soviet occupation in Stettin and survived as a musician and painter for the Soviets. He worked as a performer of palliative music in army hospitals. He told stories of having to paint over masterpieces and if he had refused to do so the Soviets would have shot him. He also painted propaganda signs and large outside murals of Soviet leaders/ war heroes like Stalin. They were so large that he had to run down the ladder to get perspective of what he painted. After being release in 1946 he rejoined family in Munich where he worked briefly as a graphic design artist for the company Überreuther, until he was let go during the currency reform. He sold paintings to occupation soldiers to make a little bit of money. He played violin in a small chamber orchestra and then for a short period he was with the Ukraine Opera Orchestra. These were difficult years scrounging to make ends meet as had been the case after WWI.

In 1952 he immigrated with this wife Elsa to Canada to join his daughters in Windsor and Detroit. He worked as a custodian at Grinell's Music Store first in Detroit and later in Windsor where he also gave music lessons and tunned pianos to make extra money. The following year Joseph auditioned for Matti Holli of the Windsor Symphony with the piece Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, was hired and served as a member of the Windsor Symphony for 29 years (1953-1982). He was a first violinist for most of his tenure (only becoming second violinist in the last few years when his arthritis and vision bothered him). Concerts where preformed at the Cleary Auditorium on Riverside Dr.

PAINTER

The Painter

Joseph's painting was also developed from the time he was a teenager; however, it did not serve him as a profession like his music did. He worked in multiple media - water colors, oils, charcoals, graphite pencil, and pastels.

He was a member of the Windsor Art Gallery where he exhibited his paintings and received recognition for some of his works like "Eve" (Windsor Star 1961) "Still Life" (Windsor Star 1962); and "Lonely Creek" (Windsor Star 1964)

Most of his hundreds of works are small paintings between 8x11 inches and 23x31 inches in size, however he also painted two large (10x10 foot) wall murals depicting the city centers of Dresden and Munich, Germany at his former home at 2595 Byng Rd in Windsor Ontario. Other large mural works were those mentioned earlier for the Soviets after WWII of Soviet leaders/war heroes painted in Stettin.

He continued to undertake his music and painting (up to age 96) until the last 2 years before his death in 1993.

VIRTUAL GALLERY

The gallery contains samples of his painting. He was a prolific painter and did hundreds of paintings over his lifetime. He worked in multiple media - water colors, oils, charcoals, graphite pencil, and pastels, however the majority of paintings are either water colors or oils.

Exhibited Paintings

Although he did not sell his paintings he did have some entered into art exhibitions through the Windsor Art Gallery. Here are a few samples.

MURALS

Murals of Dresden (Leuteritz family hometown) and Munich (Huber family hometown) were painted in 1957 on the walls (10x10 foot) of the family home (2595 Byng Rd) in Windsor.

Photos show Joseph originally painting them. His grandson Olaf Haakonstad did some touchup/restoration work on them in the 90s.
